15F en tiempo real

Reposteando instructivo para usar Twitter, cortesía de hectorpal (autor) del blog Rayas y palabras.

El próximo domingo 15 de Febrero, puedes seguir los comentarios de la gente en Tiempo Real usando Twitter. ¿Qué es Twitter? Twitter es un servicio en tiempo real que permite publicar un mensaje corto (140 caracteres). Eso sirve para varias cosas:

• Decir rápidamente que estás haciendo, mirando, o pensando, ahora.
• Enterarte que están haciendo, mirando, o pensando tus contactos, ahora.
• Buscar en todo twitter que están haciendo, mirando, o pensando tus contactos, ahora.

Es increíblemente bueno para cosas que pasan al momento, que todos vamos comentando. Para ello lo mejor es el buscador. Por ejemplo, puedes ver que se está diciendo sobre Venezuela, el iPhone, o sobre Obama. (Tendrías que haber visto la velocidad de la información el día de las elecciones en USA). ¡Lo mejor es que la búsqueda se actualiza sola!

Entonces, tienes dos alternativas:

1. Mira la película. Puedes ver lo que dice la gente en twitter sobre las elecciones del 15F.

2. Haz la película. Así podrás ir diciendo lo que vez, conversando con otros, haciendo red.



Para éste #15F tenemos las novedada de que podrás ver los tweets con el tag #15F visitando www.tweleccion.com, página hecha por Guillermo Esteves.



Twitter está por ahora sólo en inglés, pero es muy fácil. Instrucciones:

1. Abre una cuenta en twitter.com. Es fácil, lo de siempre: nombre, clave, email.
2. Opcional (Sino le das a skip, arriba): te pregunta para buscar a tus contactos que ya usan twitter. Dale tu usuario de gmail, hotmail o yahoo, y el password, y el los busca. Después te ofrece para invitar a tus contactos, si quieres.
3. Visita a algunos de los que estaremos twitteando sobre las elecciones: @hectorpal, @LuisCarlos, @NSC, @jordimirobruix, @Jogreg, @jeanfreddy, @kareta, @Naky, @RomRod. En cada uno, dale click en "follow" para que te lleguen sus actualizaciones al instante.
4. Cada vez que quieras escribir algo, ponle el texto #15F, para que salgas en el buscador twitter sobre las elecciones del 15F.
5. Cuando quieras responder a alguien, por ejemplo a mi, puedes escribir "@hectorpal estoy siguiendo las elecciones!. #15F". Lo que me dices a mi es público, y además les sale en la actualización en todos tus contactos. Esto es una gran conversa en una plaza.
6. Siempre puedes volver a entrar a twitter.com
   

Si tienes alguna pregunta puedes escribir a rayasypalabras en gmail.com.

REQUISITOS

Hay dos requisitos para participar en el referéndum:

1- Presentar la cédula laminada, esté vigente o esté vencida.
2- Estar inscrito en el Registro Electoral Permanente.

En cuanto a su LUGAR DE VOTACIÓN, si usted no se ha registrado en el Consulado de Boston no podrá hacerlo aquí. Por favor consulte su registro en la página del CNE.

La consulta se hace con el número de la cédula de identidad. El sistema le mostrará nombres, apellidos y el centro de votación en el cual está registrado.

HORARIO

Las mesas de votación serán instaladas a las 5:30 a.m. La votación comenzará tan pronto termine la instalación de las mesas. Se estima que la votación podría comenzar a las 6:00 a.m.
Las mesas serán cerradas a las 6:00 p.m., de acuerdo con lo ordenado por el CNE, a menos que haya electores esperando para ejercer su derecho al voto, en cuyo caso estarían abiertas hasta que todos lo hayan hecho.


ESCRUTINIO

El escrutinio será público, pero con un número limitado de asistentes, por el poco espacio disponible para ello.

Por favor, pasen la voz y exhorten a votar. Es importante que todos participemos en los asuntos de interés nacional: es parte fundamental de una verdadera DEMOCRACIA.

Queremos recordarles cuales fueron los resultados de los procesos electorales de 1998 y 2000. Como podrán observar, en los mismos quien ganó fue la ABSTENCIÓN...

Video: Radiografía de una mentira

You probably have seen the so called documentary The Revolution will not be Televised by Kim Bartley and Donnacha O'Briain about the April 2002 Venezuelan coup attempt. Suffice to say, the film lacks any objectivity what so ever, painting a one dimensional portrayal of good versus evil with the opposition in the role of the evil coup mongers and Chávez and his supporters in the role of the noble and heroic victims. As if reality was that simple.

Unfortunately, many people died on that fateful date and, outrageously, Venezuelans still don't know to this day who were the perpetrators of the crimes. Sadly, it is quite possible that we will never know as the government refuses to allow the establishment of an independent Truth Commission that could and should investigate what really happened on April 11, 2002.

An Empty Revolution

Just to follow up on the previous NPR post, one of the most frustrating aspects of being a vocal critic of the so called Chávez revolution is countering the Robin Hood myth spread all over the world by the Venezuelan government's, petrodollar financed, PR machinery.

Especially left-leaning and liberal minded groups in the US and Europe seem to succumb readily to the government's empty rhetoric on poverty reduction ostensibly attributable to their policies of redistribution of wealth. Nothing could be further from the truth. Why do people readily accept these misleading claims without ever asking for any tangible proof of results thereof? Rarely do we hear discussions based on facts (and by facts, we mean actual NUMBERS, like statistical evidence, not. anecdotal. evidence, people). Usually, the standard response you get when being critical is: Well, yeah ... I hear you, but he's (Chávez) at least doing something for the poor.

There is no question that reducing poverty is the single most important task that any Venezuelan government should pursue, but sticking to rigid ideology, denying the signs of rampant corruption and violence while ignoring, at the same time, sound economic advice and keeping people in false hopes don't cut it. At the end of the day, it's only results that matter. Ten years have past since the pretty revolution took on power and the results, so far, have not been pretty at all. Just read Francisco Rodríguez' piece, An Empty Revolution: The Unfulfilled Promises of Hugo Chávez, published in the upcoming Foreign Affairs March/April 2008 issue.

Currently an Assistant Professor of Economics and Latin American Studies at Wesleyan University, Rodríguez was Chief Economist of the Venezuelan National Assembly from 2000 to 2004 and in his article he does an excellent job at debunking the myths of the so called Chávez Revolution. Here is an excerpt:

...Although opinions differ on whether Chávez’s rule should be characterized as authoritarian or democratic, just about everyone appears to agree that, in contrast to his predecessors, Chávez has made the welfare of the Venezuelan poor his top priority. His government, the thinking goes, has provided subsidized food to low income families, redistributed land and wealth, and poured money from Venezuela’s booming oil industry into health and education programs. It should not be surprising, then, that in a country where politics was long dominated by rich elites, he has earned the lasting support of the Venezuelan poor.

That story line may be compelling to many who are rightly outraged by Latin America’s deep social and economic inequalities. Unfortunately, it is wrong. Neither official statistics nor independent estimates show any evidence that Chávez has reoriented state priorities to benefit the poor. Most health and human development indicators have shown no significant improvement beyond that which is normal in the midst of an oil boom. Indeed, some have deteriorated worryingly, and offcial estimates indicate that income inequality has increased. The Chávez is good for the poor hypothesis is inconsistent with the facts...

Blessed are those with Venezuelan Passports

The more you listen to these endless ideological debates going on about Venezuela under Chávez, the more you realize how useless and ridiculous they are in terms of solving every day problems afflicting ordinary Venezuelan citizens.

So it doesn't come as much of a surprise to hear the Venezuelan Consul General in Boston during a Q&A session that followed Fernando Coronil's lecture at Harvard today, spouting this little gem in front of a mostly non-Venezuelan audience: Before Chávez we had 40 years of corruption, now we don't. He seemed agitated while saying it, waving in his hand a fancy brochure that he invited us to pick up at his Consular office, a place which is open to everyone who wishes to have a little chat with him about the merits of the revolution, dissenters excluded, of course.

Just imagine, wouldn't it be nice, to be a citizen of a country whose consular personnel were just as passionate about going after their regular consular duties such as issuing passports to their citizens as our Consul General is about distributing political pamphlets?

Crude Matters in Boston

Just in time for Christmas a huge shipment of discounted heating oil for poor families in Boston arrived at Citgo's Washington Street terminal. As reported by the Boston Globe, there they were, the Citgo executives, sporting their revolutionary red jackets, along side local dignitaries, and you know who you are, standing in the cold, bitching about the lack of compassion of American oil companies and praising the Venezuelan Government's solidarity with the poor and disenfranchised. In short, the perfect public relations moment. Who could argue against such a noble cause? Hmm, what was that famous phrase again attributed to Tip O'Neill? Oh yeah, all politics is local.

Suggestion to the Venezuelan Government: How about taking care of your own people at home and, dare we say it, here in Boston? That's right folks, here in Boston! Believe it or not, our beloved Venezuelan Consulate seems to be unable or maybe unwilling to issue passports to regular Venezuelan citizen's residing in the New England Area. Apparently, there is a huge waiting list and only those who are privileged enough to know somebody in the upper echelons of the government or those who have had a death in the family can expect expeditious service. The rest of us mere mortals are condemned to eternal passport hell.

Crude Matters at Harvard

For those of you who have nothing better to do this Friday afternoon, the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University is hosting the following event: Crude Matters: The 2002 Coup Against Hugo Chávez and its Aftermath, Lecture by Fernando Coronil.
