The goddess María Lionza is part of a pantheon of cult figures that are widely-revered in Venezuela. The cult attracts people from across the entire social spectrum including the military (Chávez and General Baduel are said to be followers). The documentary María Lionza, aliento de orquídeas (2007) directed by John Petrizzelli has opened recently in Caracas. Here is the trailer.
